Machine Stitching on Block Printed Fabric with Judy Gula
Judy Gula, mixed media artist and owner of Artistic Artifacts, shares more of her fabric book pages. In this episode, Judy shares blocks she has embellished with machine stitching using a variety of WonderFil Specialty Threads. Judy talks about the different threads, their weight and the special effects they create.
Judy is using a variety of WonderFil Specialty Threads (https://www.artisticartifacts.com/category/WonderFil.html) to machine stitch and embellish her Shell Fabric book, including the following:
• Spotlite, a 40wt rayon metallic is here: https://www.artisticartifacts.com/category/MT.html. For Spotlite, WonderFil recommends a 90/14 Topstitch Needle. Spotlite is not recommended for hand stitching.
• Glamore, 12wt contrasting strands (2 ply) of rayon woven with one strand of metallic -- perfect for adding a little bit of texture and shimmer! Available here: https://www.artisticartifacts.com/category/GM.html Glamore is thin enough to fit through the eye of a sewing machine needle, but thick enough to stand out. For Glamore, Judy uses size 100 needles.
• For cotton threads, Judy selects Spagetti Thread, 12wt cotton (solid colors, https://www.artisticartifacts.com/product/SP.html) and/or Fruitti (variegated, https://www.artisticartifacts.com/product/FT.html) WonderFil recommends a 90/14 or 100/16 Topstitch needle. If using for hand stitching, a #7 Embroidery needle.
• DecoBob (https://www.artisticartifacts.com/category/deco.html) is a lightweght 80wt 2-ply polyester thread that has been “cottonized” — treated to behave more like cotton and eliminate stretch, with a textured matte finish. Also an ideal bobbin thread (available in convenient prewound bobbins too). For DecoBob, WonderFil recommends the following needles: 70/10, 80/12 microtex | 75/11, 90/14 quilting | 80/12, 90/14 topstitch. For stitching by hand: #10 or #11 sharps. Shop all needles: https://www.artisticartifacts.com/category/Ned.html
-- The Thread Tamer (https://www.artisticartifacts.com/product/W43000.html) thread stand creates vertical drawing, eliminating tension changes and preventing slippery thread from unreeling.
-- Large Wonder Guards are here: https://www.artisticartifacts.com/product/4198.html and the small size (perfect for Eleganza, etc.) are here: https://www.artisticartifacts.com/product/W43002.html
Judy uses the BERNINA Stitch Regulator, or BSR (https://www.artisticartifacts.com/product/0316435500.html) which allows the sewing speed to adapt automatically to the speed of the moving fabric and automatically controls the stitch length for even stitch formation.
For her fish print, Judy created some wonderful texture using Sari Silk Ribbon to embellish! https://www.artisticartifacts.com/category/yarn.html
Liz Kettle of Textile Evolution taught Judy to use Pellon Peltex 70 Sew-In Ultra Firm Stabilizer(https://www.artisticartifacts.com/product/70FP.html) for machine embroidery and thread painting pieces. Liz is one of the authors of the following book that Judy highly recommends:
