The Mongolian Artificial Nest Project

A short promotional film made by filmmaker Sandy Crichton for International Wildlife Consultants, featuring their CITES-approved Mongolian Artificial Nest Project. The aim of this research project is to establish a programme whereby saker falcon conservation can be achieved through sustainable use. The introduction of thousands of artificial nests to the Mongolian steppe in 2010 has seen a large rise in numbers of many of the steppe's raptors. Legal trade in saker falcons (for falconry) already exists between Mongolia and the Arab world and the project aims to take advantage of this by funding saker falcon conservation through the proceeds. The sad fact is that this new population of saker falcons simply wouldn't exist without artificial nests and the money for the project has to come from somewhere - for a poor country like Mongolia this may be the only option. The research to date has been funded by Abu Dhabi.
