New 2025 Mercedes G580 EQ EV Reveal at Auto China
In 2025, Mercedes-Benz is set to release an innovative electric version of its classic G-Class, the G580 EQ. This new model eliminates the conventional gasoline engine, replacing it with four electric motors—one at each wheel—enhancing its famed ability to tackle rough terrain.
From the outside, the electric G-Class retains its traditional look, but underneath, it's equipped with a powerful system producing 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque. These figures not only surpass its predecessor, the AMG G63, in terms of power but also provide the instant torque delivery characteristic of electric vehicles.
The electric G-Class can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 112 mph. It shines off-road too, capable of fording water up to 33.5 inches deep and climbing slopes at a 35-degree angle. The vehicle's design emphasizes off-road functionality with 9.8 inches of axle clearance and angles designed for overcoming challenging terrains.
Among its notable features are a two-speed transmission for varied terrain, a crawl mode for enhanced control, and the innovative "G-Turn," enabling the vehicle to pivot on the spot like a tank. Additionally, virtual differential locks and torque vectoring aid in maintaining traction, while adaptive dampers and specialized steering help to minimize the turning radius.
The G580 EQ's structure is built on a sturdy ladder frame, encasing a large 116.0-kilowatt-hour battery protected by carbon-enhanced materials. This not only strengthens the vehicle but also supports an impressive driving range, which, though unspecified, includes fast-charging that allows substantial battery recharge in just 32 minutes.
The exterior includes a solid, illuminated grille and an optional storage area in place of the traditional rear spare tire, offering practicality without compromising style. The classic boxy shape of the G-Class is maintained, yet it now features subtle aerodynamic tweaks to boost efficiency.
Inside, the cabin honors the G-Class legacy with updates like dual 12.3-inch displays and "transparent hood" technology, which improves visibility by showing the ground under the vehicle's front through a 360-degree camera.
The electric G-Class, debuting as the Edition One in the U.S. in 2025, will be available in exclusive colors and features like blue brake calipers and bespoke trim inserts. A synthetic engine sound feature, the "G-Roar," mimics the sound of traditional engines, merging classic G-Class charm with modern electric vehicle technology.
This model is anticipated to carry a higher price tag, reflecting its advanced technology and features. Mercedes plans to further boost its attractiveness with an upgraded battery technology shortly after its release, aiming to extend the vehicle’s range significantly. The electric G-Class represents a blend of luxury, tradition, and innovative design, marking it as a standout in the realm of modern electric vehicles.
