Here's what I know for certain.

On November 5, 1987, a six-year-old child named Elizabeth Lisa Launders was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. The medical examiner determined that she died from blunt force trauma to the head. The trauma had caused brain death. Brain death had been confirmed on November 3. Life support was discontinued on November 5. The cause of death was not in dispute then, and it is not in dispute now.

I also know that Joel Steinberg was in the apartment at 14 West 10th Street on the night of November 1, 1987, when Lisa sustained those injuries. I know that Hedda Nussbaum was in the same apartment, with an unconscious Lisa, for approximately ten hours before placing the 911 call that brought paramedics to the scene at 6:35 in the morning. I know that Lisa was never legally adopted, that Joel Steinberg never filed the paperwork that would have made her legal placement a matter of record, that she had no legally recognized guardian, and that no state agency had her in their files.

I know that the jury convicted Steinberg of first-degree manslaughter, not murder. I know the parole board said no five times. I know the "good time" statute released him anyway. I know he went to Harlem and maintained his innocence.

That's the Established column. What is confirmed by the primary source record without serious dispute. Today's job is to build the full map — all four categories — and to be honest about which claims belong where, and why.

And the discipline — the part that separates reconstruction from commentary — is in being precise about which column a claim belongs in and refusing to let it travel somewhere the evidence doesn't support.
