Multiliteracies, Performance and Assessment
In the “Multiliteracies, Performance, and Assessment” panel innovative methods will be examined including performance based learning in an Arabic classroom to testing re-imagined to examine all four Turkish language skills in real world settings and also the use of creative writing to increase the internalization of Persian production skills. Arts and real life inform how the classrooms are changing to fit the real life needs of the L2 students.
Dr. Babak Tabarraee is a lecturer and the coordinator of the Persian program at the University of Texas at Austin. His academic and professional background covers an eclectic spectrum of media and arts, including cinema, theater, and literature. His publications in Farsi include three authored books of fiction, twenty-two book-format translations, and several essays, short stories and screenplays. His English writings have appeared in Dibur, Iranian Studies, The Soundtrack, and Cinephile. His research revolves around media reception in modern Iran.
Prof. Maher Bahloul holds a PhD in Linguistics from Cornell University, New York, and an MA from the Sorbonne University, Paris. He taught courses in language, linguistics, translation, and TESOL in the United States and the Middle East. He participated in more than 60 international conferences and conducted workshops in various applied linguistics fields. Dr. Bahloul published various peer reviewed books and articles in theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, and the field of pedagogy, the last of which titled Lights! Camera! Action and the Brain: The Use of Film in Education which he co-edited with Carolyn Graham, the famous creator of Jazz Chants. Dr. Bahloul has also been promoting the field of Learning Through The Arts (LTTA). He has been conducting language learning sessions through performing arts in Europe and the MENA region; he has also been involved in teacher training in relation to LTTA methodologies and pedagogies. This effort is supported by centres he founded in Paris and Tunisia (www.newhorizoncenter.com/nhc/) in addition to an LTTA website (www.lt-ta.org) designed to promote the LTTA field across the Middle East and North Africa region. Dr. Bahloul is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of English of the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
