Wilgenhoutrups/Goat moth caterpillar (Cossus cossus)

De wilgenhoutrups is de larve van de wilgenhoutvlinder, een nachtvlinder uit de familie Cossidae (houtboorders). De rups wordt meer dan 9 cm lang en is vrij makkelijk te herkennen. De soort komt voor in heel Europa en geeft voorkeur aan vochtige omgevingen zoals met oude loofbomen en wordt vaak in polders gezien. De vliegtijd is van april tot en met augustus. De nachtactieve nachtvlinder is 6-10 centimeter groot met een vleugelspanwijdte van 7-10 cm. Het dier heeft geen roltong en kan zich daardoor niet voeden. De vlinder zet haar eitjes af in zachte delen van aangetaste bomen.
