Asteroid 2026 JN4 impacts Earth over the Arafura Sea

A small asteroid designated 2026 JN4 entered Earth’s atmosphere between Australia and Papua New Guinea at 13:44 UTC on May 15, 2026, after ESA’s Meerkat and JPL’s Scout systems identified a high Earth-impact probability from a short observation arc. This is now the 12th predicted Earth impactor and the first since December 3, 2024. Meter-scale asteroids of this size and velocity usually disintegrate high in the atmosphere.
Asteroids are constantly passing near Earth — but some are being discovered only minutes or hours before impact. In this video, we look at real asteroid tracking data, fireball footage, and Near-Earth Object (NEO) alerts to understand how close some of these objects are coming to our planet.

We examine 11 asteroid impacts that were detected shortly before atmospheric entry, compare their distances to the Earth–Moon system, and look at why astronomers are improving asteroid detection systems around the world.

Using real ESA and all-sky fireball footage, orbital tracking data, and asteroid warning timelines, we explore:

warning times before impact
Near-Earth Objects (NEOs)
asteroid sizes and distances
Chelyabinsk comparisons
real-time asteroid tracking

Most tracked asteroids pass safely by Earth. The real challenge is detecting the smaller objects that arrive with very little warning.
