The invention of the Bessemer Process changed everything. Steel production became faster, cheaper, and scalable. Carnegie saw the opportunity before most people did — and moved aggressively. He built steel plants, controlled supply chains, acquired competitors, and formed powerful alliances.

By the late 19th century, Carnegie Steel was producing more steel than entire nations.

Yet behind this meteoric rise lies one of the darkest labor conflicts in American history.

In 1892, tensions exploded at the Homestead Steel Works in Pennsylvania. Wages were cut. Working hours were extended. Labor unions pushed back. Carnegie’s partner, Henry Clay Frick, brought in Pinkerton agents to break the strike.

What followed became known as the Homestead Massacre.

Gunfire. Death. Bloodshed. Government troops deployed.

Nine workers dead. Seven Pinkertons killed. Dozens injured.

Was Andrew Carnegie directly responsible?

While publicly advocating for worker rights and later writing essays like “The Gospel of Wealth,” critics argue that Carnegie’s empire thrived on brutal efficiency and suppressed labor resistance.

In 1901, Carnegie sold his steel empire to J.P. Morgan for $480 million — a deal that made him the richest man in the world at that time. That sale led to the creation of U.S. Steel, the first billion-dollar corporation in history.

Then came another transformation.

Carnegie donated over 90% of his wealth.
He funded libraries, universities, research institutions, peace foundations, and global educational initiatives. More than 2,500 libraries were built through his philanthropy.
