Newborn Chincoteague Foal Needs Your Help!
On Saturday, DEFHR welcomed an adorable little filly into the world named Cricket. Her mother, Windy, was 1 of 12 horses impounded 2.5 months ago from Frederick County, MD. Windy is a Chincoteague pony that arrived to Days End in a state of complete depletion with little to no fat reserves remaining. Windy’s rehabilitation was further complicated when we confirmed she was pregnant and the fight to save her and her foal ensued. For the first month, Windy was so weak and couldn’t stand up on her own. Staff, interns, and volunteers were stationed outside her stall 24 hours a day and picked her up every time she needed assistance through the day and night. Windy was determined to live and we were determined to give her every chance possible.
After much anticipation, Windy went into labor Saturday afternoon. Complications during delivery required staff to intervene and it was apparent that the filly was underdeveloped requiring bottle feeding and assistance to stand. In the days since, Cricket has been seen by our veterinarian multiple times to determine the best course of action to help her underdeveloped body continue to mature and give her the best opportunity at living a healthy, normal life. The largest concern surrounds the underdeveloped bones in her knee, which require special treatment to correct and prevent limb deformity. Today, x-rays were taken to see exactly how the bones and joints developed to decide the best course of action moving forward.
We are SO thankful for your support as we look into options that include having a special shoe made for her. This shoe would help her stand and reduce additional stress on her knee joints. We are thankful for your donations, they will help us provide the best care possible for this little filly and the other 29 horses we have welcomed through our gates this year.
