What is Intermittent Explosive Disorder?
This video describes Intermittent Explosive Disorder. Intermittent Explosive Disorder is characterized by intense anger, rage, tirades, temper tantrums, arguments, aggression, threatening behavior, damaging property, irritability, and impulsiveness. Intermittent Explosive Disorder features a failure to control anger impulses, which become anger outbursts. Physical aggression and verbal aggression can potentially lead to a diagnosis as well as destructive aggression. The outbursts in Intermittent Explosive Disorder cannot be premediated and must be disproportionate to the stressor. The range of behaviors captured in Intermittent Explosive Disorder has been criticized, however, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) states the outbursts must cause marked distress. For a diagnosis of Intermittent Explosive Disorder, the outburst cannot be better explained by Anti-Social Personality Disorder, Conduct Disorder, etc. Intermittent Explosive Disorder can be diagnosed even if another disorder with similar symptoms is diagnosed, as long as the outbursts warrant independent treatment.
