Gedhun Choekyi Nyima recognized as the 11th Panchen Lama, the second-highest rank in Tibetan Buddhism, was kidnapped by China on May 17, 1995. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was only six years old when he was abducted by the Chinese government. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the official 11th Panchen Lama who was identified through Tibetan Buddhist practices and approved by Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, has never been heard from since. Beijing rejected his authority and put forward its own candidate named Gyancain Norbu. Government of China claims that Gyancain Norbu is the real Panchen Lama. On May 20 this year, Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Gedhun Choekyi Nyima is now a college graduate with a job. Tibetan government in exile said that China's abduction of the Panchen Lama and forcible denial of his religious identity is a gross violation of his religious freedom and human rights. America, too, has asked Beijing to make public the Panchen Lama's whereabouts and respect the religious freedom of Tibetans.
