In this video, Prof. John Ahr demonstrates how to add color to your copper projects using heat. The resulting heat staining will add a rainbow of color to the surface of your piece.

This technique only works on copper. And, unless you do something to preserve this colorful finish, it will eventually fade. You can protect your heat stained finish by covering it with a thin coat of lacquer or shellac. Unfortunately, coating your piece may diminish blue and purple shades.

Those of you who want a similar colorful finish on your silver projects need to watch the OJA's video entitled "Patina On Silver Using Liver of Sulfur". Once again, the bad news is that unless you do something to protect your colorful finish it will fade.
