St. Edward the Confessor was the prototype upon which the archetype of an English king was built. The British crown is in fact the "Crown of St. Edward the Confessor." While alive it was believed that he could cure blindness and other illnesses because of the sacred nature of his royal blood. In death his remains were preserved to such perfection that it was attributed to his saintly "virginity." All English monarchs traditionally take on similar magical powers after they are anointed.
