Nel 2003 nel bel mezzo della Roma rinascimentale nei pressi di Castel S.Angelo ( X-XII sec.), si aprì un elegante ristorante, che in brevissimo tempo, ottenne una stella dalla prestigiosa Michelin Guide e che in altrettanto breve tempo, avrebbe ottenuto anche la seconda stella. Il successo raggiunto dal ristorante evidenziò che a causa delle sue limitate dimensioni fisiche, quasi ogni giorno un certo numero di clienti veniva purtroppo rifiutato. Per tale inatteso ma benvenuto motivo, la proprietà decise di cercare un nuovo più ampio locale con annesso giardino che, mantenendo lo stesso staff e, praticamente, il nome originale, avrebbe potuto accomodare una più vasta clientela. Il luogo ideale venne individuato in un area del colle Oppio posta in un parco appartenente ad un vecchio palazzo romano del 1880 eretto dove sorgeva la Villa di Mecenate ( 68a.C.- 8a.C.) e le Terme di Traiano (53d.C.- 117d.C.) , le cui splendide rovine sono prospicienti il giardino del futuro ristorante.

In 2003, an elegant restaurant," Mastai", opened in the center of Renaissance Rome, near the 12 th century Castel St. Angelo, and was soon honoured with one star by the prestigious Michelin guide. Because of the very limited size of this restaurant, along with it's growing success, almost every day a number of potential clients had to be turned away. For this unexpected, though welcome, reason, the owners decided to create a larger restaurant and to include a garden area for outdoor dining. The ideal location was found in the Colle Oppio area of Rome in a park which included the ancient Roman ruins of both the Mecenate Villa ( 1st century B.C): and the Trajan Baths (1century A.D.) . The new restaurant in this location would have these splendid ruins as a backdrop.
