The Irish Rovers in New Zealand on Location 1977

In November 1977, the Irish Rovers flew to New Zealand to tape two TV SuperSpecials, a co-production for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and N.Z’s TV One. Both were screened in 1978. The Canadian contingency consisted of the Rovers (Will Millar, George Millar, Jimmy Ferguson, Joe Millar, Wilcil McDowell and temporary Rover Bob O’Donovan), Toronto director Ron Maraska and Vancouver producer Ken Gibson, while the crew members were New Zealanders. Guests on the first Special on Location include popular duo Bill & Boyd, country singer John Hore, Yolande Gibson, the Bluegrass Expedition, the Kokatahi Band and the award winning Wellington City Pipe Band. The Rovers are greeted in Northland by the Te Roopu Manutaki (Maori) Cultural group performing haka and end with the group’s farewell love song, known to us as “Now is the Hour.” The music combines the Rovers’ well known songs along with New Zealand songs in a variety of locations. The forthcoming second Special is a combination of In Concert and on location in NZ.
