PANEL #1 Generative AI and the Future of Art

Historically, artists have always been at the forefront of technological innovation: experimenting, investigating, offering critical analysis and pushing the boundaries to unveil the hidden side of things. Generative AI is testing artists’ resilience in the face of cost-efficient alternatives to human talent while also supercharging artistic prolificacy. But a new class action lawsuit against Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt raises legitimate concerns about potential copyright violations and the loss of compensation for artists. The fake Drake track “Heart on My Sleeve” that went viral using the artist’s AI-generated voice without consent, illustrates how AI opens up a well of possibilities for creatives as well as streaming services. These prominent cases have the potential to redefine our understanding of ownership and originality in a world of artificial content creation while also foreshadowing a path for the future of art.
