Jay Leno's High Performance Sports Cars | Ariel Atom | Gordon Murray Rocket | My Classic Car

This week, Dennis drops by Jay's shop (unexpectedly) and gets a tour of some high performance sports cars, including the Ariel Atom. It's all about power to weight ratio. Even the lightest new corvette at the time was around 3,200 pounds, but back in the day cars like the Lotus Elan was 1,500 pounds, thus solving that power to weight ratio in a different way. The road-worthy "Rocket" designed by Gordon Murray is only 775 pounds! The latest into that foray is the Ariel Atom. Built in America by a man named Simon Saunders and powered by the Chevy Cobalt motor, is has about the same power to weight ratio as a Bugatti Veyron, but at 300 HP! That's pretty crazy for this Hotwheel sized car with everything open to the elements. Practically no car, nor any appreciable distance from your butt to the road, it's just you....flying down the road inches off the pavement. No greater sense of speed can be had. 1,300 pounds at 300 HP. Do the math!
