The Strangely Empty Aircraft Carrier that Somehow Survived WW2

In July 1945, the skies over Japan were growing ever darker with the roar of bombers and the threat of impending doom as the Imperial forces prepared for their final showdown with their Allied enemies. Amid this tense atmosphere, on the tumultuous waters below stood Katsuragi, a majestic Unryū-class aircraft carrier with state-of-the-art technology. Completed in October of the previous year, she had arrived on the scene too late to turn the tide of war but now found herself on the frontline of the Empire’s last stand.

Despite her imposing presence, her decks were eerily devoid of the aircraft she had been built to launch. As the war had taken its toll on Japan, a shortage of pilots and planes had left Katsuragi a sleeping giant, a mere shadow of what she had originally been designed to be. Nevertheless, despite her lack of fighter planes, Katsuragi was no toothless tiger. On the contrary, her anti-aircraft guns packed some serious firepower.

As enemy aircraft came swooping down over the Seto Inland Sea, the carrier’s crew sprang into action, ready to defend their proud nation to the bitter end. With hearts pounding, each gunner carefully took aim as the first wave of attackers approached before shooting skyward with a thunderous roar, sending a defiant message to her Allied attackers: neither Katsuragi nor Japan would go quietly into the night.
