How to Handle Change Orders Before They Cost You Money

A lot of GCs fall into this trap:

You’re on site… client walks up… asks if you can just move a couple lights, open a wall, add an outlet.

You say “no problem” trying to give good customer service and get it done.

But here’s the issue:

You never explained the cost.

You never sent a change order.

And when the invoice shows up later?

They’re shocked it cost $800 to move a few lights.

That’s on you.

Before you touch anything:

✅ Send a written change order

✅ Outline scope, labor, and material costs

✅ Ask them to sign it — then do the work

If they don’t like the price, they can decline.

But if they approve it, there’s no surprises.

Clear communication now saves you a ton of frustration later.
