Suppressors: For Snipers, Assaulters, and Home Defense | Tactical Rifleman
Everyone likes Suppressors because they look cool. Why do they look cool? Is it because all the heros use them in all the action movies? Does it help put the “Special” in Special Operations? Maybe, it is the “Taboo” of using something that isn’t open to the general public and is associated with assassins and black ops. Actually, truth be told, it is a little of “all of the above.”
Besides “looking cool,” there are great reasons to own and use suppressors. First and foremost, they will help you protect your hearing, by reducing noise decibels. They are also great for reducing felt recoil, when shooting larger rifles. However, as a sniper that has played in a two-way gun fight, I love suppressors because they greatly reduce the VISUAL signature of the weapon firing. Call me a chicken, but I don’t want the bad guys to know where that bullet is coming from.
There are downsides to using a suppressor on your firearm as well. It adds length, which makes it harder to wield the weapon in tight quarters. It adds weight to the end of the gun, which slows you down, again, when wielding the weapon in CQB. I showed in the video a picture of two mags side by side. The one on the right had been in the gun while I fired only about 20rds. Those bullets are dirty as hell. Can you imagine how dirty that weapon would be after a couple dozen magazines through it? Gonna need a detailed scrubbing really quick.
I hope you enjoyed the video. Not so much a shooting tip or product review. Rather, I wanted to share a few reasons why I personally love suppressors for sniper ops, for assaulting during CQB, and for just all round fun relaxing out on the firing line. Plus, the hogs and coyotes love them.
