What to look for when buying a sequoia: 2001-2007
Some other things I forgot to mention while recording- READ BELOW
I put this video together of the main problems to look for when considering buying a new sequoia. One other thing to mention ( i forgot to talk about when recording the video), on the pre facelift gen1 sequoias (01-04) had a thinner and “more-prone” to break lower ball joint. They had a recall on them and Toyota upgraded the LBJ on those models. The lower ball joints are still a major fail point, so I would look up the vin of the vehicle you’re buying, and see if the lower ball joint recall has been done on the vehicle. If it hasn't, you can get a free upgrade and new ball joints from toyota...again, free of charge. If it has had the recall replacement already, it will most likely be the last time they have actually been changed unless previous owner was very up to date on the issue and changed the LBJ everytime he did a timing belt change which is what a lot of people in the sequoia community do. If the LBJ are old or have over 100k miles on them, I would swap them out first thing with OEM toyota lower ball joints ONLY. They are roughly $100-150 each side, while you are at it, get new bolts for each lbj as well. 4 bolts per side, and get the flanged bolts.
part # 90105-A0187. do not get the bolts with washer as they have been known to stretch when torqued to the suggested torque specs of 59ft.lbs. Another thing to check for is rust in the rear section of both front and rear wheel wells. They do sell metal repair sections to weld in for repair.
