Data centers are coming. Is your town ready? | Jeremy Kepner | TEDxBoston

Data centers are the largest infrastructure investment happening in society right now. The communities that plan thoughtfully for them today will benefit for decades, while those that do not will be left with depreciating assets and missed opportunities. At their core, these buildings do one thing at mind-boggling scale: multiplying matrices. That mathematical operation is the foundation of every neural network, every AI model, and most of modern computing. The key insight is adaptability. A data center built around a single generation of computing technology may be obsolete before it opens. Communities that identify appropriate sites, develop infrastructure plans, and build skilled local workforces now will be positioned to benefit from wave after wave of upgrades rather than being left behind. Jeremy Kepner is a Lincoln Laboratory Fellow and the founder and head of the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Supercomputing Center. He co-founded the MIT-Air Force AI Accelerator and pioneered the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center, a $100 million shared supercomputing facility serving Harvard, MIT, and several other New England universities. He holds a PhD in computational science from Princeton and is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, recognized for contributions to parallel computing, matrix-based graph algorithms, and big data. He is the author of three books published by SIAM and MIT Press, including Mathematics of Big Data and Machine Learning, and has published hundreds of peer-reviewed papers. His MIT OpenCourseWare class on the mathematics of big data has been viewed more than 250,000 times.
