Today I eat rosemary (Rosmarinus clade of the Salvia genus) because it grows everywhere all over Los Angeles. I feature a landscaped plant in the Westwood neighborhood. I haven’t bought rosemary since moving to Los Angeles, and I cook with it often. Do you buy your rosemary, or do you grow it, or do you pick it when you see it? Practice safe foraging by only harvesting plants you can 100% identify.

If you live in southern California, you should never buy this herb from the grocery store. You know this plant. It grows everywhere. It thrives here because it’s heat- and drought-resistant, perfectly suited for our Mediterranean climate. You’ve eaten this herb before, and already know if you like the flavor. This is rosemary, the group of plants in the Rosmarinus clade of the Salvia genus inside the mint family, Lamiaceae. All rosemary is edible. Its scent and flavor is unmistakably rosemary—piney, woodsy, incredibly fragrant. Its oils will linger on your skin long after you touch it. The periwinkle blue flowers are also edible and quite tasty as a mild garnish. Yes, chef! You can see them doing this in season 3 of The Bear. Oh, and those spider webs? Don’t mind them. In fact, welcome them. They’ll keep bad bugs away, and they’re a good sign that the plant hasn’t recently been sprayed with pesticides. Just eat around them. Harvest the tender new growth, and that will encourage the plant to keep growing. Rosemary! Don’t buy it—forage it.
