In this week's episode of 'What's Underneath: Black Voices,' rapper Olu of Earthgang opens up about the conflicts he is experiencing with his burgeoning success as a musician, and the hardships that comes with being pulled away from family, friends and community when life drives you towards your purpose. The death of his beloved father, who showed up for everyone, took Olu's ‘training wheels’ off and further propelled him to believe in himself and his artistic calling. As he steps into putting himself first, he is breaking free from limiting ideas that were ingrained in him, like that he has to struggle just to be close to god, and wear baggy jeans, jerseys and suits to be be a man.
“I think groups are made stronger by people who know themselves and put themselves first, and then bring that back into the group that ultimately allows you to open up more doors for more people.”
