June 3rd, 1991. The legendary Thomas “Hitman” Hearns takes on undefeated reigning WBC World Light Heavyweight Champion Virgil “Quicksilver” Hill (a 2.5-1 betting favorite) who had remarkably made 10 successful defenses of his title from November 1987 to January 1991.

Prefight records; Hearns 49(40)-3-1, Hill 30(18)-0.

Hearns was trained by Alex Sherer for this fight, a former assistant trainer at the famous Kronk Gym as longtime manager and trainer Emanuel Steward refused to continue training Hearns as he thought Hearns should retire at this stage of his career.

Although Hill is the bigger fighter (a natural Light Heavyweight), but Hearns who started off as a Welterweight had a 1” reach and 1/2” height advantages over the reigning champion.

Going into the fight, Hearns had beaten a great number of notable oppositions in Juan Domingo Roldan, Michael Olajide, Mark Medal, Dennis Andries, Doug DeWitt, James Shuler, James Kinchen, Clyde Gray, Luigi Minchillo, Marcos Geraldo, Bruce Curry, Murray Sutherland, Eddie Gazo, Angel Espada, Harold Weston, Mike Colbert, Randy Shields, Pipino Cuevas, Saensak Muangsurin, Wilfred Benitez & Roberto Duran.

On the other hand, Hill held meaningful victories over Bobby Czyz, Jean Marie Emebe, James Kinchen, Leslie Stewart & Marvin Camel.

This was a great tactical fight and overall highly competitive but Hearns landed his vaunted right hands often and accurately, particularly in the 2nd half which made the difference in the verdict; winning via scores of 116-112, 115-113 (2x).

Hill to his credit, displayed an incredible chin as he took the best shots of The Hitman who had laid out the likes of Shuler, Roldan, Cuevas and Duran with his right hand; one of the most dangerous weapons in the history of the sport.

With this victory, Hearns garnered his 6th and final world title in 5 different weight divisions in 11 years. The following are world divisional titles won by The Hitman;

1) TKO2 over Pipino Cuevas, for the WBA Welterweight Title in August 1980.

2) MD15 over Wilfredo Benitez, for the WBC Super Welterweight Title in December 1982.

3) TKO10 over Dennis Andries, for the WBC Light Heavyweight Title in March 1987.

4) KO4 over Juan Domingo Roldan for the WBC Middleweight Title in October 1987.

5) MD12 over James Kinchen for the WBO Super Middleweight Title in November 1988.

6) UD12 over Virgil Hill for the WBC World Light Heavyweight Title in Jun 1991.
