What 99% of authors do not know

It was back in 2011 when Amazon started selling more digital books than physical books.

A lot has happened since then. Amazon now represents as much as 80% of the U.S. e-book market.

But the discussion about digital vs. print has often centered around sales volume, i.e., units sold.

When it comes to revenue, print books continue to be the driving factor for the whole publishing industry—including Amazon.

Based on numbers by e-commerce company One Click Retail, we estimate that Amazon's global book revenues will grow to $6 billion bn in 2017, while e-book sales will be around $1.5 billion. (The profit contribution of the two formats may be a different story, but I do not have any data on that.)

In any case, I started analyzing Amazon's "print bestseller lists" for additional insights into the book market and the performance of various genres.
