AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS2

Affordable housing in Kenya is a critical issue driven by rapid urbanization, population growth, and rising living costs. With over 60% of urban dwellers residing in informal settlements, the demand for low- to middle-income housing has significantly outpaced supply. In response, the Kenyan government launched the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) as part of the Big Four Agenda, aiming to deliver over 500,000 housing units across the country.

Despite progress, challenges remain — including limited access to financing, high land costs, inadequate infrastructure, and bureaucratic hurdles. Innovative partnerships between public and private sectors, adoption of alternative building technologies, and community-inclusive planning are emerging as key solutions.

Affordable housing in Kenya is more than just shelter; it's about dignity, opportunity, and sustainable urban development. Addressing this need effectively could transform lives, stimulate economic growth, and build more inclusive cities.
