Why Hundreds of Manatees Can't Leave This Florida Spring

Every winter, hundreds of manatees cram into this one Florida spring — and they can't leave.
Here's why: a manatee looks blubbery, but it's barely got any fat and makes almost no body heat of its own. When the surrounding river drops below 68°F, the cold drains the warmth right out of it until its body shuts down. Blue Spring stays a constant 72°F year-round — it's not warm, it just never gets cold — so it becomes the only thing keeping them alive. They pack in, and they don't dare leave.
In 1970, just 14 manatees wintered here. The record now: 932 in a single morning — that packed spring is one of Florida's greatest wildlife comebacks.
