Things to do in Big Bear during Winter | Big Bear Lake Winter Travel Guide

This small town in Southern California is well known for its two main ski resorts of Bear Mountain and Snow Summit and this is the perfect time to strap on your skis or snowboard and hit the slopes. It’s not just skiing that you can do here. There are plenty of other fun ways to enjoy the snow and winter weather.

Big Bear Drive:

Big Bear is located just over 100 miles inland of Los Angeles, nestled up in the San Bernardino Mountains. Big Bear is a small mountain town (population 5,200) situated on the banks of fish filled, 7-mile Big Bear Lake.

Snow Drift Tubing Park:
30 minutes before reaching the Big bear town, you will see this Snow Drift Tubing park in Running springs area. You can choose from 4 different sizes of tubes so it's great for all ages. There are wooden stairs so you don't have to hike up the soft snow and different hills for all levels of bravery. The rate is $20/hour and parking is $10.

Snow Valley:
Snow Valley is the closest ski area to the valley floor, five miles east of Running Springs on Highway 18 – around 30 minutes to Big Bear Lake. With 13 lifts and 240 acres of powdery terrain, Snow Valley has something for every level skier and boarder. Snow Valley features a wide variety of skiable and rideable trails and terrain. A favorite of skiers and boarders of all ages.
All day ticket is $74, half day is $64 and night time rate is $35.

Boulder bay park:
Now, we have reached Big bear. Situated just two miles east from Big Bear Dam, this newer park was constructed during 2010 and has since become a hub for picnicking and other outdoor recreation. The lake was frozen and it was beautiful. There will be a fine of $500 if you step into the lake ice and its dangerous as well. Boulder Bay Park is great for family and kids, and it is a tourist spot! There is plenty of parking, and there are tons of benches and tables to sit at and have a picnic. A perfect place to take pictures, especially with the rock formations and the lake view.

Big Bear Lake:
Big Bear is a Manmade Lake. The first dam was created in 1885. It was expanded upon in 1910, thus tripling the amount of water in the lake. Big Bear Lake's water almost exclusively comes from snow melt from the surrounding mountains!. The area turned into an absolute haven of beauty and fun. Now, it is one of the best places in the country for recreation. Boating, fishing, and swimming are just a few of the things that people love about coming here. Wintertime in Big Bear isn't just for skiing and snowboarding - visitors enjoy walking and picnicking by the lake; a word of caution though - please stay off the ice as this can be dangerous.

Bear mountain Ski Resort:
Bear Mountain offers a 200-acre winter playground for skiers and snowboarders. Along with Snow Summit, Bear Mountain makes up the Big Bear Mountain Resort. A one and half hour tubing session cost you $45.

Snow Summit:
With over 240 acre of skiable terrain and 27 trails of all ability levels, snow summit boasts 18 skiable miles. Covered with state of the art snow making system and a lift system of 11 lifts, snow summit is where SoCal skies and rides. With the kind of capacity and snow making system, its no wonder snow summit was selected to host the inaugural winter games in 1977.

Big bear village:
At the heart of Big Bear Lake you’ll find a charming district known as The Village that serves as the hub for shopping, dining and entertainment. Wintertime transforms The Village into a snowy wonderland with holiday lights twinkling in the trees. Yes, you'll want to add this little spot to your getaway bucket list. Cuisine throughout the Valley ranges from Latin to Italian, Chinese to Thai, Japanese to Nepalese, Tropical to American and really anything else you can imagine. From cooking and kitchen supplies, to athletic wear, unique foods, and art galleries, there's little you won't find in Big Bear's shopping hub.
