5 Minute Pearls: Psychiatric Care Considerations for Sexually and Gender Diverse Populations

Alex Keuroghlian, MD, MPH is an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School who also directs two federally funded centers for sexual and gender minority populations. In this brief discussion, he shares clinically relevant insights, including: A gender affirming approach to mental healthcare involves believing and honoring who patients say they are and providing services that affirm them in their gender identity and expression.
Gender affirming care, including surgery and hormone therapy, decrease odds of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. External and internal stigma-related stress in sexually and gender diverse populations can develop into depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other health problems. Heed the critically important call by Dr. Keuroghlian for all healthcare professionals to develop cultural responsiveness and skill in serving transgender and gender diverse people.
