After nearly 40 years of investigating, a suspect has been named in the 1987 murder of an East Texas man who was found dead under a bridge thanks to DNA evidence.

On March 8, 1987, the body of Rickey Herriage was found beneath a bridge on County Road 1500 in Henderson County. Despite deputies' best efforts, the case remained unsolved for decades.

Now, in 2025, DNA testing has led officials to name Dallas Reynolds Casanova as the potential suspect. Casanova lived in Henderson County at the time of the murder and later died in 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Henderson County Sheriff's Office announced Friday.

The connections began in 2019 when Sheriff Botie Hillhouse reignited the investigation by sending clothing evidence from the scene to Pure Gold Forensics in Redlands, California. That lab found DNA that was uploaded to a law enforcement system, but no matches were found, the sheriff's office said.

Still determined, the sheriff's office partnered with Season of Justice, a nonprofit that provided partial funding for advanced DNA testing. In 2022, Othram Inc., a forensic genomics company based in The Woodlands, came together for further DNA analysis.

The FBI Dallas Violent Crimes Task Force got involved as well and applied their cutting-edge genealogical techniques to the case.
Ultimately, all of the work led to identifying Casanova as the potential suspect. Pure Gold Forensics and investigators confirmed that Casanova’s DNA was on Herriage’s clothing with Herriage's own DNA.

This evidence linked Casanova directly to the crime, the sheriff's office said.

“This case would not have been solved without the relentless dedication and collaboration of everyone involved,” Hillhouse said. “We are thankful for the support we received from our partners and proud of the determination shown by our team. I’m extremely proud that this new evidence can provide some answers to the family."
