White House downplays reports of imminent Russian attack on Ukraine
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Friday downplayed reports that a Russian invasion of Ukraine was imminent, but warned there was still "a distinct possibility" an attack could happen.
"Our latest intelligence information, and it does not include a statement that Vladimir Putin has definitely given an order to proceed with the invasion," Sullivan said during a news briefing at the White House.
"We have not seen anything come to us that says a final decision has been taken."
However, Sullivan said the U.S. believed that there was a possibility an invasion could still take place.
"We believe he very well may give the final go order. That is a very distinct possibility but We are not standing here before you today and saying the order has been given and the invasion is on," Sullivan said.
The White House said Friday that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could come within the week and urged Americans to leave the country now.
Defense officials anticipate a bloody campaign that begins with two days of aerial bombardment and electronic warfare, followed by an invasion, with the possible goal of regime change.
