[HSK 4.2] The difference between 不过 and 但是

[HSK 4.2] 不过 however, but [conj. 连词]
(the tone of 不过 is lighter than 但是HSK2)
不过 is like “by the way”. You’re just offering more information.
但是 indicates two different/opposite situations.

不过他还在学习汉字。
清华 is good at Chinese , but (by the way) he is still learning Chinese characters.

沙克 is ugly, but he is tender.
(Opposite situations: ugly vs. tender)
