🔥23 Simple Ways to join a Fintech company Management Career in Tech By Yolanda Yu

The Fintech industry is very hot today: especially with Bitcoin, banking and digital payment. Many consider fintech jobs - joining a fintech company because it is lucrative with great prospect. As a career coach, I respond to the market requests in my career coaching practice.

A career in Fintech feels like not so easy to get. And you often can go into a no-through road, being told that you don’t have the industry experience. But how can we get experience being an outsider?

As a Fintech industry insider who has no finance background, I had some hypothesis on where you can enter the industry. I researched on 1,000+ people with the “Fintech” tag in my LinkedIn network, And here are the findings on how to enter Fintech industry (though not necessarily Ant Group or Bitcoin companies..., and it's too late for Ant IPO, anyway.)

The most transferable functions for a career transition into Fintech are:
- Engineering/Product/Data Science / Consumer Insights, Commercial and digital marketing
- Ideally you should be from the tech industry: after all Fintech is Financial + technology
- Surprisingly, I have not seen a single Corporate Finance professional moving into the industry. If you had thought that Finance background is the key to entering Fintech, then it’s not true.
- But this is not the complete list – say, I know people from legal background entered the legal tech / Fintech domain as well
The industries people typically enter from are:
- Most commonly, banks or broadly the financial services industry. And here it also includes investment as well
- #2 are tech and digital industries.
o It’s easy to understand why digital – because they offer the digital use cases.
o As for Tech, it’s understandable when people come over from SaaS or cloud services, because most of the Fintech solutions today are in the clouds.
o Mobile phone and App store: Just imagine that for any Fintech App that target consumers, from ewallet to wealth management, it’s a big deal if the App is pre-installed in the mobile.
o Then you have IOT – it’s really important for any smart city: imagine our refrigerator automatically buy the eggs and makes the payment.
- #3 are the traditional industries and government
o This is no longer news, a lot of Telcos, retail chains and food chains ventured into e-wallets: the good thing about them is they are day-to-day use cases, and all have vast customer base
o For retail, the other thing is many of the brands are getting into eCommerce and wanting to run their own ecommerce website. As such, payment functions become important too.
o A unique industry is insurance. It’s kind of Financial Services, but operated in a different way. And now there’s InsurTech which is kind of Fintech, but not the same. I would say it’s a rather good entry point. Because of how Insurance industry is getting disrupted, if you are in insurance, you are pretty much in InsurTech. And if you are in InsurTech, you are pretty much in Fintech ecosystem and can easily move around.
o Travel and hotel: these are a bit less frequent use cases than F&B and retail. Still, AirAsia is building its super App. Virgin? SIA?
o Another random card is government. Government is having more positions to look after the vertical of Fintech.
- #4 is Consulting and Start-up
o Management consulting: possible to start from general disciplines and into Fintech
o Market research like Nielsen and Kantar handle data. Or even better, Bloomberg that handles financial data
o Service firms like Events companies, can have fintech discipline
o Actually any service companies that split into industries, will give you an opportunity
o Recruitment Agency is another example.
o Start-up: you can start your own loyalty or ewallet or fintech firm!
