Crushed! - Karjakin vs Nakamura | Skilling Open Day 1

Opening: Vienna Game
Title: Crushed! - Karjakin vs Nakamura | Skilling Open Day 1

[Event "2020-champions-chess-tour-skilling-open"]
[Date "2020.11.24"]
[Round "4"]
[White "Karjakin, Sergey"]
[Black "Nakamura, Hikaru"]
[Result "0-1"]
1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 {the Bishop Opening} Nc6 3. Nc3 {becomes a Vienna game} Nf6 4.
d3 Bb4 {attacking and pinning the Knight. The main line is Nge2 but Karjakin
isn't worried about the pawn structure and develops the knight to its most
aggressive position} 5. Nf3 d6 6. O-O Bxc3 7. bxc3 Be6 8. Bb3 {exchanging on
e6 was also good} h6 9. Re1 O-O {the game is now original} 10. h3 Ne7 11. Nh4 {
not the best maneuver. Why not d4?} (11. d4 Ng6 12. Bxe6 fxe6 13. dxe5 Nxe5 14.
Nxe5 dxe5 15. Qe2 {with at least an equal game}) 11... c5 12. Qf3 {will
support the Knight jump} Kh7 13. g4 {Karjakin goes directly for the King} Nfg8
{removes the Knight so after} 14. g5 {Black isn't forced to capture} c4 {
begins a good counterplan} 15. dxc4 Rc8 {this is an important moment of the
game because c4 is under attack but isn't a great problem while white has at
least a couple of natural plans to follow. there is the semi-open b-file to
occupy with the rook watching b7 from far. There is also the d1 file where
Karjakin could place the rook on e1 attacking and pinning the backward pawn.
And as a third idea and probably the sharpest there is still a Black king to
hunt} 16. Nf5 Qd7 17. c5 dxc5 18. Rd1 Qc6 19. Nxe7 Nxe7 {quiz time: what's the
best continuation for white?} 20. gxh6 {with the idea to expose the Black King
even if this means leaving the bishop in the trap,} (20. Bxe6 {looks logical
because Black is threatening to trap the bishop with c4. Karjakin instead} Qxe6
) 20... c4 21. hxg7 {there is only a good move, not Rg8} Kxg7 (21... Rg8 22.
Qh5+ Kxg7 23. Qh6#) 22. Ba3 Ng6 23. Bxf8+ Rxf8 24. h4 {looks a bit desperate} (
24. Bxc4 Qxc4 25. Rd3 {even if Black is clearly winning}) 24... Nxh4 25. Qg3+
Ng6 26. f3 cxb3 27. axb3 Rh8 28. c4 Qc5+ 29. Kf1 (29. Qf2 {there is the simple
tactic} Rh1+ {that wins the queen} 30. Kg2 Rh2+ 31. Kxh2 Qxf2+) (29. Kg2 {
gets checkmated} Bh3+ 30. Kh1 Bf1+ 31. Qh2 Rxh2+ 32. Kxh2 Qf2+ 33. Kh1 Qg2#)
29... Kf6 {is the best way to unpin the Knight} 30. Qg1 {tries to exchange the
queens} Bh3+ 31. Ke2 Nf4+ 32. Kd2 Rd8+ {and Karjakin resigns.} 33. Kc1 (33. Kc3
Ne2+) 33... Ne2+ 0-1
