The Our Boys Steel Orchestra was formed in the year 1961, and with its formation, was one of the first steel orchestras in Tobago. The orchestra is still presently located at the corner of Front and Cook streets, where the magic began in the olden days, below some trees in a bushy area, at the very site the band now practices and calls home. The building houses many facilities such as a bar and kitchen built by the members for the members.
The orchestra was formed primarily to get young men off the streets and into an environment where they could embrace their own culture, THE STEEL PAN. Today, the band caters to girls and young women as well, with its theme EACH ONE TEACH ONE. The band is managed presently by our very own son of the soil, Mr Bootle St. Claire.
Since its formation the orchestra has built an incredible name for itself. The band has toured places like Nigeria, Guam, San Francisco, Paris, France, and Brussels, Belgium.
Our Boys Steel Orchestra has had the pleasure of performing for Queen Elizabeth, Queen of England, and the late Minister Nelson Mandela, President and Freedom Fighter of South Africa and the world.
Our Boys Steel Orchestra is also the first on the island to play the revolutionary DOUBLE TENOR, the QUADRAPHONICS and the CELLO pans.
The Orchestra has had many members and supporters, with regular music classes for these members as our band continues to grow and turn out musicians, arrangers, performers, and players throughout Tobago and Trinidad, the Caribbean and the world.
Some of our older musicians have invested their time in training our new musicians, some of whom now assist with teaching and arranging music for the band as well as other bands. If you visit any of the steelbands presently in Tobago, you are sure to find an Our Boys past player. This band has turned out many excellent players over the years, some of whom are right here on the island of Tobago forming and playing in other bands.
Several past members have migrated – playing and teaching abroad outside of Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean.
Our Boys Steel Orchestra is the Tobago House of Assembly Panorama Champions 2015, 2016, and 2018, placing second in 2017 and 2019. We have also placed in the Trinidad and Tobago National Panorama Championships for the past four years.
