Rep. Adam Schiff, the House Intelligence Committee chair, pressed for more details about the quid pro quo that Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, mentioned in his opening statement. Schiff asked when Sondland worked with President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and a top Ukrainian aide to make a public statement for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to deliver, and whether it was understood that the public statement about investigations were a requirement from Trump. "That's correct," Sondland said. Sondland testified Wednesday that there was a “quid pro quo” in which U.S. aid and a White House meeting were contingent on Ukraine agreeing to investigate the 2016 elections and the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, where the son of 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden, Hunter, sat on the board. Sondland also said he understood the “prerequisites” to be a reflection of “Trump’s desires and requirements.”
