Zendaya has responded to age gap backlash. The actress appeared in the film ‘Malcolm & Marie’ when she was 24-years-old. She played actor Jon David Washington’s love interest, who was 36 at the time. In the film the two actors get intimate and we see their relationship eventually crumble.
Given the 12-year age gap, many users branded the casting as inappropriate.

One user wrote: ‘The practice of casting younger actresses with men that are older than them is a symptom of bigger problem in Hollywood.’

Another defended the casting though, saying ‘yall praise margot robbie being 22 in the wolf of wallstreet but now say shit like zendaya is too young for malcom and marie???’

Zendaya then responded to the backlash, saying in an interview “I’ve played a 16-year-old since I was 16. It’s like watching, I guess, your younger sibling, now they’re grown, and you’re not ready for it.,”

She went on to say “It’s hard for people to wrap [their heads] around the idea that I am grown in real life.”

“I’m so grateful for Jon David, because he’s such a talent and I wouldn’t have been able to go to those places without that partnership”

Jon was also then asked about the age gap backlash, to which he said: “I wasn’t concerned about it because she is a woman. People are going to see in this film how much of a woman she is [...] they’re going to see how mature she is in this role.”
