This 1970s color German film (with English narration) produced for Mercedes-Benz by Klaus Eckert of A.I.D. Film Productions champions the range and versatility of the company’s line of trucks (or if you are British, lorries) by showing “how technology supports the transport user” through the use of animated technical illustrations and real-life demonstration footage, with a focus on transmission efficiency (TRT: 19:18). The film most likely dates to the period when the new 400 family of Mercedes-Benz diesel engines made their debut in the new LP 1632 truck as a V10 engine with a displacement of 16 litres and an output of 235 kW (320 hp) at 2500 rpm. In 1972 the bigger engine was complemented by the OM 402 V8 diesel, with 12.8 litres displacement and 188 kW (256 hp) output at 2500 rpm. For medium-duty trucks, the OM 401, a V6 diesel with 9.6 litres displacement and 141 kW (192 hp) at 2500 rpm, followed in 1975. Intercooler and exhaust-gas turbochargers would arrive on the scene in 1980.

Mercedes trucks transport cargo on a highway (0:08). A red Mercedes-Benz Coca-Cola “trunking” truck. Orange “tipper” trucks drive a muddy road with puddles of water (0:33). Scenes of auto manufacturing in an assembly plant. Welding, engine installation, dashboard and steering assembly (1:27). A new line of Mercedes trucks in a parking lot includes dump trucks and special purpose vehicles. The family of heavy “v-configuration diesel engines” on the road (1:52). The trucks’ common components in closeup with horsepower title overlays: A 9.6 litre V6 engine, “192 PS (horsepower).” A 12.8 litre V8, “240 PS (horsepower).” A 12.8 litre V8, “256 PS (horsepower).” A 16 litre V10, “320 PS (horsepower). (2:36). An excavator dumps soil into a Mercedes tipper truck (2:49). German title overlays: “Technik Im Dienste Des Transports, Eine Mercedes-Benz Information Über Die Nutzung Der Kraft Beim LKW.” Narration translates the title as: “Technology as a Tool of Transport Efficiency, a Mercedes-Benz Film About the Efficient Use of Engine Performance in a Truck". Closeup on the Mercedes-Benz logo (3:23). Closeup on a truck’s combustion engine moving in slow motion (3:43). An animated illustration shows the inner workings of the fuel injector, valves, and pistons in cutaway. Closeups of the actual engine show the rotating crankshaft (4:09). A diesel engine in closeup, a collage-style illustration of the same, and it’s placement inside a truck, in comparison to the size of a large ship (5:23). Working trucks at the excavation site (5:51). A young boy pedals a tricycle with a fixed ratio gear, followed by a full-sized bicycle with multiple gears (6:22). The bicycle crankshaft in closeup. Animated illustrations of high and low gear ratios (7:08). An inclined plane is introduced. A truck’s gearbox and inner cogs are simplified in colorful illustrations (8:00). Closeup on a “Start” ignition button. A manual transmission gearshift is engaged. A blue truck drives forward. Shifting and changing gears (9:12). A heavy truck is passed by smaller vehicles (10:41). A small model steam engine moves back and in reverse. A dump truck backs up (11:37). The gearbox’s reverse gear is illustrated (12:04). A transfer gearbox and planetary gear set is illustrated, enabling all-wheel-drive (13:05). A truck on slippery mud. Wheels spin. All-wheel-drive is engaged, the truck continues (13:51). Differentials in illustrated closeup. Driving through curves and over hills (14:50). Wheeling through thick mud. Cutaways of real engines in motion (16:04). Residential and urban German settings. A construction site (17:10). Driving uphill. A caravan of Mercedes trucks (18:04). End titles: “Hergestellt von A.I.D. Filmproduktion, Klaus Eckert im Auftrag der Daimler-Benz AG.” Trans. “Produced by A.I.D. Film Productions, Klaus Eckert, on behalf of Daimler-Benz Auto Group” (19:02).
