Chinese in Kolkata Ep 3 Celebration of Chinese New Year

Celebration of Chinese New year in  Kolkata China Town takes back to the age old folk tradition of China. Nian the dragon, used to pay a visit on every second full moon after winter solstice. He used to create terror among the villagers, until one old wise man drove him away using red banners and firecrackers. Then onwards the day, started to be called as Chinese new year. 

Below is a poem to depict the rituals of Chinese new year

Every year
as the New Year comes 
dance the monster 
with cymbal  and drums.
Half he is bull
Half he is  lion 
He creates terror 
his name is Nian 
he will destroy 
the factories and shops 
he is given lettuce
so his strives and stops 
He rushes inside 
 as the fireworks cracks
To collect red banners 
and lovely gift packs
