Cliff Burtons last minutes // Memorial Stone // Crash site

For you boys and girls that never get a chance to visit where the Great Cliff Burton lost his life.

This video shows where Metallica's bus travelled the minutes before the crash on the morning of september 27, 1986. The band was traveling from a gig at Solnahallen in Stockholm the night before and was heading for Copenhagen, Denmark. Ofcourse they never got there the way they had planned, as the bus ended up by the side of the road, crushing 24 year old bassist Cliff Burton under the bus. I would imagine the bus started skidding where my car is at about 4:35 into this video. After the crash, the 48 year old driver claimed he hit a patch of ice (very uncommon that time of year in the south of Sweden) and that caused the accident. James Hetfield was supposed to have walked pretty much in his underwear going north looking for this ice, and wanting to kill the driver as he found none. My personal guess is that the driver fell asleep, but who knows? Another person testified the driver was well rested as the overnight drive began. He eventually walked away a free man, as the court could not prove he did anything wrong.

I have asked the police to give me the official report on the accident, but sadly it is not around anymore. So there is not much information to be added on the subject. I did found out that the bus licence plate had ”AI 33 XNH” on it, and the drivers full name is classified, but he had the initials P.L.

The video also features the Memorial Stone by the side of the road, where people come to show their respect every day. It was payed for by donations and a group of diehard fans back in 2006, around the time of the 20th anniversary. It used to be placed a few hundred metres down the road at a diner called Gyllene Rasten, but it has closed since. The location of the Memorial now is way better I think.

I end the video by taking the very short walk to where the bus flipped over and Cliff lost his life. There is a rock in the ditch that marks the spot where it happened, at least that's the information I have.
