2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport | Real World Review | Autotrader

While there are plenty of notable three-row SUVs on the market, not many offer the right combination of car-like handling, legitimate off-road ability and decent fuel economy, which is why we were eager to spend some time with the fully redesigned 2017 Land Rover Discovery.
Working hard to broaden its appeal, Land Rover's fifth-generation Discovery is competitively priced, with sleek styling and impressive off-road technology. It's also offered with an optional turbo-diesel V6, which was the engine in our test vehicle.
Today's diesel V6 burns cleaner than gas-powered engines and gets better mileage. You can also expect lower long-term maintenance costs and higher resale value with the diesel. And it feels more powerful than the gasoline-powered Discovery, too.
Slip into the driver's seat and you can't help but zen out a little in quiet, comfortable luxury. And at high speeds, the Discovery is smooth and steady. However, there is noticeable body roll in corners. This is a quick SUV, but it's not especially sporty.
Of course, the new Disco is more than ready for weekend adventures. With dial-up terrain response and just over 11 inches of ground clearance, you can feel safe taking family and friends off the beaten path.
No matter where you go, you'll appreciate the sleek, well-appointed cabin that seats up to seven. We just wish there was a bit more cushioning in the seats to keep you extra comfortable on those super long road trips.
Still, there's a lot of luxury here. We really like some of the family-friendly features like the sliding, reclining second-row seats, an integrated cooler box and a hands-free liftgate with fold-out panel that's great for extra seating or for containing loose cargo.
There's no lack of tech on the new Discovery. We found the upgraded 10-in touchscreen and In-Control Pro infotainment system to be engaging, but occasionally confusing and a little slow. However, up to nine USB ports is impressive. And through the In-Control remote app, you can do things like fold down the seats or adjust climate controls so you never get into an overly hot or cold car.
And then there's the safety factor, with available driver-assist technologies like emergency auto braking, pedestrian and roadside detection and adaptive cruise control, just to name a few. You'll feel safe, whether you're on the highway or blazing a trail in the wilderness. However, in everyday driving, we found the forward-collision warning to be a little too sensitive.
There's no denying this is a beautiful SUV. The interior is plush and the price is right. This HSE model with the diesel engine is about $80,000. It sounds like a lot, but it's actually less than a similarly equipped Cadillac Escalade.
Ultimately, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery manages to be stylishly well-mannered, yet amazingly rugged, and -- thanks to the new diesel engine -- more powerful and efficient than ever.
