Drill powered woodworking lathe in 15 easy steps
The video shows my build of a small lathe or mini lathe. I need these for small or medium-sized rounded workpieces. As a material basis, I have used inexpensive fiber board, chipboard and plywood and for the drive I use a drilling machine with variable speed setting. The time is about 3-5 hours of work, provided you have a plan and a sketch of the machine. The following videos and ideas have served me as a template among others:
Izzy Swan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwE_2Owp3fA;
Jack Houweling - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCaGW9z4blM;
Matthias Wandel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCt3LooUVsQ.
As a result of my efforts and the first lathe experiences, I was able to produce the first workpieces and will show them at the end of the video.
Here is the work plan:
1. Create the base plate for the lathe
2. Mount the guide rail
3. Create a headstock and a tailstock
4. Create a spindle
5. Drill the holes for the spindle bearings and the spindle
6. Drill the hole for the spindle into the headstock and tailstock
7. Insert threaded nuts into the base plates
8. Create a cross slide made of plywood
9. Create a plywood cross slide
10. Create a tool rest with adjustable height
11. Create a substructure construction for the drill
12. Fasten the drill with an insulated pipe clamp
13. Make a lathe chuck or face plate
14. Assemble the lathe
15. Sharpen your woodturning chisels and find out how to woodturning
