"Island Alpaca" Ninth Annual Shearing Day Event 2016

Island Alpaca sheared over 450 pounds of fleece off of 56 alpaca. Amazing!!!

Alpacas are shorn once a year in the Spring. Shearing is an important part of alpaca farming, and benefits the alpaca greatly to get some relief with the onset of the warmer weather to come.

Alpacas can be shorn standing up or stretched out on the ground or a table with out any harm to the animal. We prefer to lie them down, tying the front legs together and the back legs together. This method allows the shearer to work faster and get a more even cut. We think it is less stressful too because it is faster. Typically each animal is shorn in less than seven minutes.

Not only does shearing keep the alpaca cool and comfortable, it provides us with valuable fleece that can be processed into yarn, roving or simply felt, and then later, beautiful hand made products

Meet these alpacas on an Island in Massachusetts called Martha's Vineyard! Alpacas are sweet and very gentle. These animals are sweet and very gentle. You can pet them if they are close enough and trust me you have many chances to pet one because we have over 70! We also have this wonderful store with all sorts of alpaca products from jackets to footwear to toys to soap. Yes you read right, I said soap! Go to the "Island Alpaca" website to find out more and about out how to visit. Trust me the visit is worth it!! So much fun for people off all ages from little toddlers to wise elders. Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity!
