Kolkata's East-West Metro is India's first underwater metro, which runs partially underwater through the Hooghly River. The metro line connects the city's Salt Lake area to Howrah on the west bank of the Hooghly River, passing through the heart of Kolkata's business district.

The underwater section of the metro line is approximately 520 meters long and includes a tunnel beneath the riverbed at a depth of around 30 meters. The tunnel was constructed using a specialized tunnel boring machine designed to work in difficult soil conditions and withstand high water pressure.
