- 15th surah to be revealed

Background
It is reported that, when the Prophet (PBUH) lost his last son, an opponent who hated him taunted him with being ‘cut off’ without posterity. This Meccan sura comes to reassure the Prophet and as a retort to his enemy.
The Quraish were angry with him because he worshiped and served only Allah and repudiated their idolatry publicly. For this very reason he was deprived of the rank, esteem and honor that he enjoyed among his people before Prophethood and was now cut off from his community. The handful of his Companions also were helpless, poor people who were being persecuted and tyrannized. Furthermore, he was bereaved by the death of two sons, one after the other, at which the near relatives and the people of his clan, brotherhood and neighborhood were rejoicing and uttering such words that were disheartening and disturbing for a noble person who had treated even his enemies most kindly.
At this, Allah just in one sentence of this brief Surah gave him the good news, better news than that which has ever been given to any man in the world, besides the decision that it will be his opponents who will be cut off from their root and not he. Such were the disturbing conditions under which Surah
Translation
1. We have truly given abundance to you [Prophet]
(Note 1) The term “Kawthar” is a descriptive case derived from the word “kathrat” which can be implied to mean ‘abundance’; that is, abundance of goodness, of spiritual benefits and blessings. Such abundance is unbounded and limitless. In this verse, Allah gave the glad tidings of such abundance of goodness to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

2. So pray to your Lord and make your sacrifice to Him alone
(Note 2) Allah is the Only One who can grant such abundance, so thanks should be offered only to Him. This ayah reminds us that we should remain steadfast: our prayers are only for Allah and our sacrifices too are for Him Alone

3. It is the one who hates you who has been cut off
(Note 3) The term “sani'” is derived from “sana'an” with the meaning of 'enmity, spitefulness, and peevishness’
It is worthy to note that “abtar” originally means 'the animal whose tail is cut off' and the enemies of Islam taunted the holy Prophet (PBUH) by saying this with the hope that after his departure from this world and having no son to inherit his position, the dissolution of Islam's sovereignty would happen. But, Qur'an, consoling the holy Prophet (PBUH) tells him that it is not him who will be without offspring, but surely his enemy is.
