The European Roller (Coracias garrulus) is a medium-sized bird species with brigthly blue plumage. The genders are similar, even in spring the males are more brightly and have more difference between the colour of feathers. This species lives in the woodlands with open areas, wood pastures, orchards and mixed vegetation habitats, where they can breed in holes of old trees and where they can prey for insects from a higher spots (top of trees, poles etc), similar to the shrikes. Roller is a threatened bird species in Europe, its population has declined significantly since the 1970's, because of the loss of their habitats and breeding places. But due to the protecting activities, the decrease stopped in Hungary in the last few years. Using artificial nest-boxes the number of breeding pairs are increasing. For more information see the webpage of rollerproject.eu This camera system is built in an artificial nest box on the territory of Bükki National Park Directorate, in the Borsodi-Mezőség Landscape Protection Area. It is composed of an outside and an inside camera (you can switch between them with an icon on the video, next to the settings) to see the life of a Roller family from egg laying until the fledglings leave the nest. The building of the camera system was supported by the Conservation of the European Roller (Coracias garrulus) in the Carpathian Basin (LIFE13/NAT/HU/000081) Life+ project.
