Getting New Dreadlocks - How To Dread Straight Hair

On April 28, 2018 I got my hair dreadlocked for the first time! Well, actually, I got my hair sectioned, back-combed and crocheted into knots to eventually become dreadlocks which takes approximately 6 months to 1 year to fully lock depending on a bunch of different factors.

I love, love, love my new baby dreads and this video explains the process from beginning to end. You will see my hair stylist, Layla of @laylaslocks on Instagram, section off my hair using a new technique where the top is curved and then the sides and bottom are straight. Typically, this is done in a brick pattern where the "seams" of each brick meet the middle of the brick below hence "brick pattern."

Layla then back-combs each section before using a very, very small crochet hook (not latch hook) to weave hairs into a knotted mass of hair. She does this starting at the bottom of my head near my neck then works her way up my head in rows before reaching the top. She spent more time at the top finding the perfect sections to fit the shape of my head and natural part line.

The whole process took just over 8 hours.

As the hairs continue to knot into an actual dread lock the hair will be pulled tighter which will shrink and become shorter over time. As the dreadlocks mature my hair will continue to grow normally and get longer over time.

So basically, get ready for a year of crappy, loose, messy looking hair until the dreadlocks fully mature looking more rope-like.
