Are you a suitable candidate for trifocal lenses?

This is a question we frequently encounter in our daily practice. If you are over 40 years old and have difficulty seeing both near and far, you may be a good candidate for trifocal lenses. There are several key factors we evaluate when considering this procedure.

First, age is an important criterion. In my practice, I generally prefer patients to be over 45 years old. Second, your prescription is a significant factor. The higher your prescription, and the more dependent you are on glasses for both near and distance vision, the more suitable you are for this procedure. Third, the structure of your eyes is crucial. To be a candidate for trifocal lenses, your eyes must be free of any defects or damage.

To determine this, we conduct a comprehensive examination, evaluating each layer of the eye, from the cornea at the front to the retina at the back. If the patient has no underlying eye conditions, trifocal lenses can be recommended.

The procedure itself is essentially a cataract surgery. We remove the eye’s natural lens and replace it with a trifocal lens implant. The surgery is typically quick, taking about 10 minutes, and we usually perform it on each eye on separate days. If the patient prefers and the situation permits, we may operate on the second eye the following day or after a short interval.

Most patients begin to see clearly by the third or fourth day after surgery. They can comfortably watch TV or use their phones. However, it’s important to note that these lenses require a period of adaptation. As the communication between the brain and eyes improves, visual performance and clarity also enhance over time.
