Learning Beyond Boundaries: Teaching through Projects at Avenues

In a successful project-based learning curriculum, students engage deeply with the subject matter – unveiling and then applying new knowledge – as they learn how to solve real-world problems. “The teachers help us learn, but we also help ourselves learn,” explains Ava, a 6th grader who is working with her team to combat pollution in the Hudson River. Facilitating a project like Ava’s, however, involves planning, training and the support of a school administration that embraces project-based learning. And interdisciplinary projects require teachers to collaborate. During her Hudson River project, Ava noticed that her learning “connected throughout our classes, because once we understood one topic, that led to another.”

From pre-K to the upper grades, our students have worked on some amazing projects. In this video, see how our teachers and administrators work together to create an interdisciplinary, thriving project-based learning program.
